The Atlanta Ole Miss Scholarship Funds
Mary Pat Langford Scholarship Fund
The Mary Patricia Langford Scholarship honors the daughter of Ole Miss alumna, Dr. Beverly Langford. Mary Pat was a freshman at Ole Miss in March 1987, when her life tragically ended, along with four other Chi Omega Sorority members. These five young women were killed in a car-truck accident during a charity walk-a-thon on Mississippi Highway 6 East, not far from Oxford.
Mary Pat was an enthusiastic and caring person who loved people and life. She enjoyed reaching out to others and any and all new experiences. She was president of the Chorale, a member of the Drill Team, and First Runner-Up to Miss Riverwood High School in Atlanta.
Mary Pat’s mother said, “Anytime you lose a child on the threshold of adulthood, you can’t help but think about the unfulfilled promise of that young person’s life.” In 2005, Dr. Langford established this scholarship in Mary Pat’s memory so that other similar, outstanding young people would have the opportunity to fulfill their promise. The fund’s current balance, primarily funded by the family, is approximately $35,000 and has a target of at least $100,000. The goal of this scholarship is to assist students from the Atlanta metro area who are well rounded in a variety of activities, demonstrate leadership ability, and are involved in their community.
J. Lucian Smith, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund
The J. Lucian Smith, Jr Memorial Scholarship was endowed in 1992 by Mrs. Claire Smith with a $50,000 contribution in her late husband’s memory. She subsequently contributed an additional $20,000 to the Scholarship Fund. Mr. “Luke” Smith was a 1940 graduate of Ole Miss and served in numerous management positions at Coca Cola, including President from 1975 through 1979. Mr. Smith was inducted into the Ole Miss Alumni Hall of Fame in 1993. The Scholarship for $1,000 per semester is available for any incoming freshman from the Greater Atlanta area. The student must maintain a 2.5 GPA and can continue to receive the grant for 10 consecutive semesters.
Jackelyn K. & Christopher F. Byrd Memorial Scholarship
The Jackelyn K. and Christopher F. Byrd Memorial Scholarship honors the memory of Jackie Kulzer and Christopher Byrd, both of Atlanta and members of the Atlanta Ole Miss Club. On May 8, 2015, Jackie Kulzer, her fiancé Christopher Byrd, his father, Greg, and brother, Phillip, were tragically killed in a plane crash on I-285 in Atlanta, GA., while en route to watch Chris’s brother, Robert, graduate from Ole Miss. This endowment was established by their families as a way to pay tribute to the lives and legacy of this outstanding couple. It is named the “The Jackelyn K. and Christopher F. Byrd Memorial Scholarship” in honor of their planned nuptials. The endowment will benefit students of the Patterson School of Accountancy, of which Jackie was an alumna. Beginning with the Rebels After Work Holiday Party in December 2015, the Atlanta Ole Miss Club is pleased and honored to support this scholarship in memory of Jackie Kulzer and Chris Byrd.
